Positives
The first thing that jumps out at you with Jake Long is his size. He possesses great size to play either tackle positions on the next level. He's a new breed of offensive tackle with his athleticism and quick feet; he'll be able to stay with the quicker defensive ends as well as play in a zone blocking scheme. Similar to Joe Thomas and Robert Gallery, when they were coming out, as far as where he stands talent wise. He's expressed versatility on the next level, playing both left and right tackle during his time at Michigan. He could have easily declared his eligibility this past season, contending him for the second offensive tackle spot with Levi Brown.
Negatives
There's not a whole lot to pick about Jake Long's game. He's got size, solid footwork and whatnot. One could make a case that he's good, not great, at all aspects of his game but he has a lot of room to develop. He's only been a starter for two seasons now (one at left tackle, one at right), it's going to be interesting to see how he performs only entering his second full season as a left tackle. This season will tell us a lot about Long, but there's no one in his league in college football as far as offensive linemen are concerned. Not sure how many teams will use a top pick for a right tackle, which makes it even more important that he step in and perform in his second season at left tackle. Remember Robert Gallery made the switch from right tackle to left tackle in the NFL and it didn't really work out too well, teams are going to look into that if he struggles a bit this season playing on the left. He comes from a school that generally produces high character guys, a huge plus.
