Is Favre the Best Football Player Ever?

Wednesday, March 05, 2008 by Andrew Brown

This question was posed to us by Andrew Brown.  You may remember Andrew from his commentary during our Scouting Combine coverage.  We are curious to hear your thoughts:

There has been a lot of talk since yesterday about Brett Favre and where he ranks amongst the best quarterbacks of all time.  From a records standpoint it's impossible to not put him with the elite to ever play the position, but most seem to have a hard time putting him above the likes of Unitas or Montana.  That said- if you ask who is a better football player it seems the answer would be Brett.  He embodied everything that is football.  So it begs the question, can Brett Favre be the 4th or 5th best quarterback ever, but still be the best FOOTBALL player to ever put on the pads?

Let us know what you think!

  1. With all due respect to Brett he's not the Greatest Quaterback even in My Opinon that Joe Montana but he's definately one of the Top Ten All Time Greats maybe even top five and I would say number two quaterback behind Montana. He was an amzing player though definately a great one and I will miss seeing him play even with all the Heartache he caused my team....lol

  2. I'd have to rank Favre as the third best quarterback of all time, with Elway at one and Montana at two. There is no doubt that Favre was tough and played the game with great enthusiasm, but Elway was a leader of men. He almost single handly carried three very mediocore teams to super bowls, and anytime the Broncos were down in a game, they knew they had a chance to win as long as #7 was under center. Montana had a lot of talent around him and at the time played in a revolutionary new offensive system with good coaching, but with four super bowls I've got to give him the nod over Bret. Either way, Favre is a lock for Canton and will always be remembered, at least by our generation, not only as one of the best players, but one of the most respected men to ever take an NFL field, and that will be his enduring legacy.

  3. Favre will be remembered as one of the best QBs ever. Top three for sure. He played with a style that coaches tell you to avoid. He was the prototypical gunslinger. He may have thrown and NFL record number of picks, but i suppose that hasnt stopped coaches from starting, evidenced by the long standing NFL record for consecutive starts. As a diehard lions fan, i would like to say, its a sad day for the pack and the league, but its a great day to be a lion haha.

  4. Favre is in the top 3 with Elway and Montana. I have Favre 1, but you can't really go wrong with any of them. If you could put them all on the exact same teams, I don't think any of them would do any better than the others. Those 3, in my opinion, seperated themselves from everyone else.

  5. Farve even though he didn't win the super bowls that everyone else did on the list, his production and playingtime certainly lasted longer, he has all the records right now of a qb including consecutive starts which is hard for a qb in the nfl to accomplish, and does have a super bowl win, however he also does have 3 mvps in a row, how many has that, I would say that he's no lower than 3 and in some peoples eyes yes he could be the number one of all time. Don't forget the work he did with the community, he wasn't one of those qb's that disapeared after sun either. Good luck Brett thanks for everything you did.
